IEL PhD Call for applications

Collegio Carlo Alberto University (Turin, Italy) is pleased to announce the call for applications for a three-year doctoral programme “IEL – Institutions, Economics and Law International Programme” organised in cooperation with other renowned scientific institutions.

For the academic year starting in winter 2019, 9 places will be available and qualified doctoral students will receive scholarships.

Entrants are invited to apply no later than 16 April (12 PM) this year. Candidates who intend to obtain the Master’s degree by 31 September this year may also take part in the recruitment process on a conditional basis.

2019 Summer Institute in Law and Economics at the University of Chicago

The 2019 Summer Institute in Law and Economics at the University of Chicago Law School is in its 8th summer and this year’s organizing theme –Regulation of Consumer Markets – is set as an timely and illuminating topic in which to delve more deeply into the tools and techniques of law and economics. For the past seven summers, experienced and more junior scholars/academics as well judges, policy makers, and advanced students have come to University of Chicago Law School to engage in two weeks of rigorous course work and debate. In addition to the four intensive courses, there are special lectures and an opportunity to present non-published academic works in progress.

Call for papers: 36th EALE Annual Conference

The call for papers for the 36th EALE Annual Conference (Tel Aviv University, 18-20 September 2019) is now open. Papers may be on any topic in or related to Law and Economics. Policy papers are eligible if they deal with very important and timely issues. Submissions must be original and not yet published and preference is given to full papers.

Submit online at eale.org by April 8, 2019.

In the submission form you will be asked to indicate whether you are eligible for the Göran Skogh Award for the most promising paper presented at the EALE Conference by a young scholar. To qualify for the award, all of the authors must have obtained their PhD prior to April 8, 2017. The winner will receive EUR 1,000.

If you would like your paper to be scheduled on a particular day for religious reasons, please send an email to eale2019@tauex.tau.ac.il contextually to the submission. Later scheduling requests will not be considered.

Acceptance will be communicated on or around May 25, 2019.
 
Confirmation through Registration: Authors of accepted papers will have about two weeks to confirm their attendance by registering to the conference. Papers by authors who are not able to confirm will be excluded from the program. We do this to minimize the number of empty slots at the conference.

Registration fee (including EALE membership): €300 for regular participants and €175 for Ph.D. students.

Accomodation: Tel Aviv tends to be a very busy city during September, and we strongly recommend to reserve your accomodation as early as possible. We are happy to offer you a choice of hotels in agreement with Tel Aviv University, at special rates for the participants of the conference – on an availability basis. Call for Papers: Conference on Data Science and Law
7-8 June 2019, ETH Zürich, Switzerland

In recent years, the digitization of legal texts and developments in statistics and computer science have paved the way for new methodological approaches in the area of data science and law. This constellation of new data and methods has created exciting opportunities for progress on old questions as well as the prospect of opening entirely new areas in empirical legal scholarship.

The Conference on Data Science and Law will convene researchers across disciplines who are interested in this burgeoning field. Scholars in law, social and behavioral sciences, digital humanities, computer science, machine learning, and data analytics are invited to present works-in-progress in all areas of empirical legal studies that involve big data sources or use data science techniques, including natural language processing, machine learning, algorithmic fairness, topic modeling, or network analysis. The purpose of the conference is to highlight the best and most innovative scholarship in data science and law and to help build an intellectual community in support of this new field. Works that are descriptive in nature are invited as well as research that focuses on causal inference.

The workshop will be held at ETH Zürich, Switzerland on June 7–8, 2019. Molly Roberts (UCSD) will give a keynote on her research in this area. Researchers are invited to submit unpublished working papers for presentation at the conference by February 12th, 2019. Papers will be selected through a peer review process. While full drafts are recommended, we will accept and review extended abstracts.

6th International Workshop on Economic Analysis of Litigation – Call for Papers

The 6th International Workshop on Economic Analysis of Litigation will be hosted by the University of Granada, Spain, on next June 24-25, 2019.

Objectives of the workshop: 
The aim of this meeting is to bring together economists and lawyers to discuss the problems of justice, courts’ functioning and the litigation process. This year, the organizers would like to put particular emphasis on the assessment of the Quality of Justice and its interaction with society and economic activity.
A selection of papers will be considered for publication on a special section of the International Review of Law and Economics.

Topics:
The organizing committee encourages submissions of both theoretical and empirical works, especially in the following topics: Quality of Justice, Quality of Judicial Decisions, Constitutional Courts, Judicial Independence, Judicial Institutions and the Economy, Judicial Performance, Courts’ Organization, Judicial Decision-Making, Litigation Process, Comparative Judicial Systems.

2019 Society for Economic Research on Copyright Issues (SERCI) Annual Congress

The 2019 annual congress of SERCI will be held in Montpellier (France) on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th of July. The local organisation of the event will be undertaken by Alain Marciano (University of Montpellier).

The Invited SERCI Lecture will be delivered by Zorina Khanhttps://www.bowdoin.edu/ faculty/b/bkhan/ (Economics, Bowdoin College).

There is no registration fee for participation at the SERCI Annual Congress. Proposals for papers to be presented at the congress should be sent as an email attachment to: richard@serci.org. Submissions should be received no later than 21st April 2019.

At the submissions stage, a detailed abstract is sufficient (setting out the issue to be studied, the methods to be used, and, if possible, the likely results), although of course full papers are most welcome. In any case, completed versions of accepted papers will be required by late June 2019. Submissions should clearly state the source of any financial aid supporting the research presented in the paper (apart from any support provided by the home academic institution).

Submissions are encouraged on any topic related to the economics of copyright generally defined. Topics of interest to SERCI include (but are not restricted to) such issues as the efficient level of copyright protection, the causes and effects of copyright piracy, licensing and pricing of copyright protected material, the regulation and efficiency of copyright collectives, the public domain for creative works, cultural economics and the copyright industries, markets for musical works, and labour markets in the creative industries.
