CIVICA Liability & AI Regulation (CLAIR) Workshop

We kindly invite you to participate in the CIVICA Liability & AI Regulation (CLAIR) Workshop, which will take place on 1–2 December 2025 at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). The event is organized in partnership with the Polish Association of Law and Economics (PSEAP).

The CLAIR Workshop is an interdisciplinary event co-organised by Warsaw School of Economics, Bocconi University, EUI, and Stockholm School of Economics within the CIVICA European University Alliance, bringing together legal scholars, economists, policymakers, behavioural scientists, and industry experts to explore the evolving landscape of AI liability regulation in the European Union.

Despite the withdrawal of the AI Liability Directive (AILD), momentum for debating about challenges of AI liability remains strong. This workshop aims to provide evidence-based foundations for the ex-post supervision of AI in the EU, addressing misinformation in the innovation debate and discussing how to strike the right balance between innovation and accountability.

The organizers warmly welcome submissions of abstracts (max. 500 words), extended abstracts, or full papers engaging with these themes.

Please submit your contribution by 31 October 2025 via this form: https://forms.gle/7ygqzNj7LL3MdoBC7

The workshop will feature keynote lectures by:
Jan De Bruyne (KU Leuven)
Beatriz Botero Arcila (Sciences Po)

Published proceedings will follow the event, contributing to the broader debate on systemic AI regulation in Europe.

CEAPS seminar – prof. Jerg Gutmann

We warmly invite you to a CEAPS seminar will be held on Thursday (22.5.2025), with a presentation by Prof. Jerg Gutmann (University of Hamburg). The title of the presentation is “Can public data protection regimes mitigate users’ privacy concerns about AI? Evidence from a survey experiment”.

The seminar will take place at 17:00 in room B002 (Faculty of Economic Sciences).

Abstract: We examine the trade-off between functionality and data privacy inherent in many AI products by conducting a randomized survey experiment with 1,734 participants from the US and several European countries. Participants’ willingness to adopt a hypothetical,  AI-enhanced app is measured under three sets of treatments: (i) installation defaults (opt-in vs. opt-out), (ii) salience of data privacy risks, and (iii) regulatory regimes with different levels of data protection. In addition, we study how the willingness to adopt depends on individual attitudes and preferences. We find no effect of defaults or salience, while a regulatory regime with stricter privacy protection increases the likelihood that the app is adopted. Finally, greater data privacy concerns, greater risk aversion, lower levels of trust, and greater skepticism toward AI are associated with a significantly lower willingness to adopt the app.

Title: Coordination on altruistic market with imperfect substitutes

Abstract: Charitable gifts and volunteering deliver enormous value in areas where neither the government, nor the commercial sector is sufficiently active. However, altruistic markets often develop severe inefficiencies due to miscoordination of volunteers. In this paper, we focus on two coordination failures which result in wasted volunteering labor and resources, and/or losses in recipient welfare, namely (1) oversupply of a single altruistic good and (2) ineffective allocation of volunteers across multiple altruistic goods. We conduct a laboratory experiment, in which participants in a group of four are independently deciding whether to provide a costly help to a charity or not. The baseline condition involves a single (high-priority) altruistic good with a restricted demand. While all those how decide to help incur a cost, only one unit of help generates a benefit for the recipient. In other conditions, we add a second (low-priority) altruistic good with unrestricted demand but lower recipient benefit. All conditions involve a within-subject treatment manipulation – we introduce a coordination device which informs those who decided to provide a high-priority good of whether the demand for this good was already met or not. We find that the coordination device significantly improves the efficiency of the altruistic market in all conditions. Specifically, in the baseline condition, the device decreases the supply of high-priority good (and thus eliminates its oversupply), while in the other conditions, the device increases the supply of high-priority good (and thus eliminates its undersupply) by effectively reallocating volunteers across the two goods.

We look forward to seeing you there!
